Wands, Wands and more Wands!

PDF Print E-mail

 by Joe Lefler

This routine is made up of three different wand tricks that I put together to make a complete routine.

REQUIREMENTS

A Tipsy Wand (sometimes known as a Flipple Tipple Wand)  a Tantalizing Wand, a Fantasio Vanishing Wand, a Devil's Hank (this comes complete with the Tantalizing Wand), a sheet of newspaper and a 36" silk.

All of these items are available from Practical Magic.

SETUP

All items are in your table.

ROUTINE

I tell the audience I have been having a few problems and maybe I need more than a magic word, maybe I need a Magic Wand. Would they like to see my new one? I bring it out (Tipsy Wand) and explain that on my way to the show, I dropped the wand and broke off the end. (I point to the end in front of me and the other end falls down. I do not see this.)

As the children yell about the other end - I look; however, before I do, it is brought back up in place so I don't see it down. This is done three times, until I do see it down. I apologize and turn it around to fix it. As I do, the other end falls down and I say, "If it ever falls again let me know because I need a good magic wand to do the magic."When the other end falls down I say "I can't use this wand as the end is all floppy; but, I brought my old wand and nothing ever happens to it."

Put away the Tipsy Wand and bring out the Tantalizing Wand. Tap it on the table a couple of times to show that it is solid. Explain that when you are going to do a trick you will wave the wand and the magic will happen. As you do, the end falls off and the children willscream to let you know. Pick up the end and put it back on. As you do, slide the tube and the tip will appear to jump to the other end. The children will let you know and you try it again with the same results. Ask if anyone knows anything about magic wands and pick a volunteer to help.

After introducing the child, hand him the wand tip and ask him to hold it. Wrap the rest of the wand in the newspaper, leaving the white tip showing and hand thewand to the child to hold. (Tell him to hold it tight and not let it fall out of the paper.)

Bring out the Devil's Hank and make it into a little bag. Ask the child to drop the wand tip into the bag and tap it with the magic wand. Tell him the tip will disappear andreappear on the magic wand. Show that the tip has disappeared. Pull the wand out of the newspaper leaving the sliding tube behind inside the newspaper and show it to the audience. Of course it will be multi-colored and you say, "I can't use a wand like that, it looks like my under…"

Put the wand away and bring out the Fantasio Vanishing Wand. Explain that it is a good thing you  bring extra wands. Tell the audience you are not sure you can trust your volunteer, so  you will put the wand under the 36" silk to protect it.

As you hand it to him, you remove the wand tip from the wand (under cover of the silk); pull the wand out of the other tip and let the wand collapse into your hand. Have the child hold the remaining tip that is under the silk and, as you turn to hand it to him, take your other hand with the wand out from under the silk and drop it into your upstage pocket. You explain that for your next trick you will need a wand - ask him to hand you the wand. It is very funny as he tries to find the wand and only gets the wand tip. Lead the audience in a big round of applause and sit the child down before he makes us all disappear.
