Hi Ho Hats routine by Ian Adair
I've praised it before, and I'll praise it again - Hi Ho Hats is a great effect for the children’s show performer. For those who are lucky enough to own the outfit, or those who may be considering purchasing it, here is a tried and tested presentation using the shop folder on its own This consists of a beautifully constructed folder representing a hat shop. I found that during my birthday party shows, this shop folder is ideal for the visible production of a birthday card. The card actually appears inside the front window! In performance the magician states that he really wanted to present the birthday boy/girl with a very special card. (He further explains that as he lives in Magicland (up in the sky), and there's only one card shop there, sadly it was closed before he left to do the magic show.) Instead, a magic card shop (fo1der) is displayed, first showing the back door, then the reverse - the empty window. "And inside the window are lots of lovely birthday cards,” the magician exclaims. The children point and shout out that the window is empty. The magician continues "Oh dear, perhaps the cards are inside the shop - let 's find out.” The shop folder is flicked open as in Hi Ho Hats, enabling the magician to peer through the cut-out window. "No cards - not a sausage.” Refolded, the back of the unit faces the audience. The children are asked to recite their favourite magic words or wiggle their fingers. When the shop folder is reversed, there inside the window is a special birthday card. The card is removed and shown, then opened so the performer can read the contents, and displayed in full view, ready for the child to be presented with it at the end of the show. The shop folder may be used as supplied, but if wished, a small sign boldly marked CARDS could be fixed over the hat design above the window, using a small blob of Blu- Tack. Using my computer, I personally prepare my own special cards and found that one can easily be loaded into the appropriate strip within the folder. On occasions, during a birthday party for two children, insert two cards, one overlapping the other. It's a great way of producing a special magic birthday card. Hope you think so!
